Game engine development has undergone rapid development in recent history. Together with the enormous increase in hardware performance, we are now able to produce real-time outputs that a few years ago would have taken days, weeks, or months. For 20 years, I have been professionally involved in the development of real-time game graphics and animation, as well as the production of rendered visual effects. Until recently, these were two separate worlds with their own rules, procedures, and specifics. However, the trend of development seems to be clear - in the near future, these worlds will increasingly intersect. It is very likely that the intersection will be so significant that the boundaries between rendered and real-time graphics will cease to exist in many areas of digital visual production.
